LOUPE Americas opens on September 15, 2026 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Chicago, with more than 400 exhibitors and three days of live press demonstrations. For North American label and packaging converters, it is the one week of the year when nearly every press, ink, inspection and software vendor is in the same building.
A three-day show with 400 exhibitors rewards the visitors who arrive with their questions already written. Color measurement is where that preparation pays most: the demos are impressive, the claims sound alike, and the differences that matter — spectral or RGB, repeatability at speed, patch size — rarely fit on a booth banner. This checklist is meant to be read before you go, and argued about on the floor.
Why color measurement belongs on your LOUPE agenda
A press demonstration shows you a press running well under ideal conditions, with an operator who knows every quirk of that machine. What it does not show you is the makeready on Monday morning with a new substrate, a spot color the brand owner tightened last quarter, and a shift that has never run the job.
That is where inline color measurement earns its place: measuring every printed colorbar, at full production speed, against the reference the brand owner signed off. Offline handheld spectrophotometers remain the reference for approval, but they sample a handful of sheets per job. Inline systems measure continuously, which changes the economics of makeready waste and press stops.
Five things to check at any color or inspection booth
1. Is it spectral or RGB? Camera-based inspection systems are excellent at catching defects: missing print, registration errors, splices. Most of them use RGB sensors, which cannot produce a spectral curve or a reliable Lab value under a defined illuminant. Ask the vendor directly whether the system reports spectral data (and how many bands) or an RGB-derived approximation. If you need ΔE against a brand standard, you need spectral.
2. What is the repeatability, and under what conditions? A vendor number like "0.5 ΔE" means little without the conditions: press speed, substrate, patch size, illuminant and observer. Ask for repeatability measured on the press at production speed, not on a static sample. DeltaOne, for reference, is specified at 0.1 ΔE repeatability at up to 500 m/min on 2 × 2 mm colorbars, with 36 spectral bands. Whatever system you evaluate, insist on the same level of detail.
3. How small can the colorbar be? Every millimeter of colorbar is substrate you pay for and then slit off. A system that needs 5 mm patches costs more per running meter than one that reads 2 mm patches. Ask for the minimum patch size at your press width and speed.
4. Where does the data go? Inline measurement is only useful if the results land in the software your prepress and QA teams already use. Ask which color management platforms the system connects to (ChromaChecker, MeasureColor, or others), whether the connection is live or a file export, and who owns the data.
5. What happens on an existing press? Many converters at LOUPE are not buying a new press. Ask whether the system retrofits on your current flexo line, what the mounting footprint is, and whether it can move between presses.
